Towing Your Car After an Accident

Blog

After an accident, people often have several thoughts racing through their minds, including what to do about their wrecked vehicles. While you don't exactly want to plan for an accident, in the event you are involved in a collision, it's critical you know what to do about towing your vehicle. Here is some information to get you started.

Move to Safety

Attempt to move your vehicle to a safer location on the road if the accident occurred on a busy street. Moving your vehicle is important because it reduces the likelihood of another vehicle hitting your car and causing even further damage or injuries. When moving your vehicle, don't worry about leaving access for the tow driver. An experienced towing professional will be able to retrieve your vehicle from the side of the road, the shoulder, or any other location.

Provide Details

The police officer that arrives on the scene will typically call a towing service if the driver of the vehicle is subdued or has significant injuries. However, this step is not a requirement. You can also call your own towing company if you are up to it. Should you decide to go with this option, provide the driver with as many details as you can about your vehicle to ensure they arrive with the proper equipment and to get the most accurate estimate of the cost.

Don't Worry About Costs

During this time, your worry should not be on cost. It should instead be about getting your vehicle towed so that an assessment of the damage can begin. If you have auto insurance coverage for the vehicle, an insurance company will typically pick up the cost for the tow. If you are found to be at fault for the accident, it will be your insurance company. If the other person is at fault, their insurance will likely be billed.

Collect Belongings

If you're able to, collect your belongings from the vehicle. It's not uncommon for a towing company to hold on to a vehicle for a few days before the insurance company provides instructions on where to tow the vehicle. However, if the vehicle has significant damage, it might be towed to a salvage lot. Towing lots and salvage lots both prioritize security; however, it's still a good idea to remove your important belongings at the scene.

To ensure you're even more prepared, search for emergency towing services in your area and keep their information in your smartphone so that you have it when you need it.
