Remaining Safe Following A Winter Weather Accident

Blog

During the middle of winter, weather can make driving hazardous. Accidents happen in the blink of an eye due to reduced visibility and slick roads. Getting into an accident during poor weather is the worst time, especially if your vehicle becomes immobilized and you are stuck waiting on an emergency tow. Here are a few tips to remain safe following an accident.

Remain Calm

The most important thing you can do if you have been involved in an accident during winter weather is to remain calm. If you have the ability to continue to drive, move your vehicle as far off the road as possible. Then, you want to take a deep breath and assess your injuries. Make sure you have your hazards on, and if you have emergency triangles to put up around you, use them. Finally, call emergency personnel and your tow company to find out what they want you to do, as law enforcement will occasionally ask you to exchange information and file a report later.

Get to Safety

Staying in your vehicle is not where you want to be when the roads are slick. If you were involved in an accident, it is likely that another accident will take place. When you are sitting on the side of the road with your vehicle, make sure you keep your seatbelt on so you are protected in case of another accident. If you are not able to clear the roadway from your vehicles, you need to make sure you get yourself to safety. This means you need to make sure you check for vehicles and get as far from the road as possible.

Stay Warm

If you have driven off the road after losing control, you will want to make sure that you remain warm. Keep the engine running if possible, but make sure your exhaust pipe is clear of snow, and wrap yourself in blankets. You do not want to leave the scene of an accident unless you have been given instructions from the law enforcement to do so.

Collect Evidence

In today's technology age, collecting evidence while you are waiting on the law enforcement is much easier. Take as many pictures as possible, and write notes or take a video to record what happened. If you have the ability to talk to the other person involved, exchange information with them. Finally, look to see if anyone who witnessed the accident also stopped. To clear the road the fastest, get their name, phone number, and record what they saw. This will allow them to leave for safety and still be reached if police need to talk with them later.

It is important to remember that the roads may change as the weather changes. Make sure you stay vigilant, and always have an emergency kit in your vehicle that contains heat packs, blankets, flares, and important documents. towing and caring for a 4-wheel-drive vehicle

Owning a 4-wheel-drive SUV comes with more expense and doing things a bit differently. When you put tires on your 4-wheel-drive vehicle, you will have to replace all four at once. The tread-wear must be even to protect the 4-wheel-drive elements of the vehicle. When you have a 4-wheel-drive vehicle towed, you cannot simply hook it up to any tow truck and have it delivered to your local mechanic's shop. This blog will show you what needs to be done when your 4-wheel-drive vehicle needs towed and the other differences of owning a vehicle that goes beyond the basic 2-wheel-drive.
